Africa remains a destination that is predominantly visited as part of a tour – including safari tours.
We can source Kenyan Schillings but do not keep a stock so it os best to order them in advance.
It is important to consider security while travelling through Africa. Try not to carry large amounts of money on you – and definitely be subtle about the money or jewellery you have. Even the tourist areas still have high levels of poverty. Money belts and using hotel safes should be enough to keep your valuables safe. You should consider taking a Cash Passport Card (even with a low balance) with you for emergencies – the emergency assistance and ability to get funds quickly can give you great peace of mind.
It is best to take small US dollar notes that are as new as possible to Africa. Some tours need to be paid for in US Dollars when you arrive – it is usually OK to pay using $50 bills, but steer clear from US$100 bills whenever possible. There are many forged US Bills in Africa so it is safest just to avoid $100s completely. If you do have some expenses to pay for in US Dollars it is best to check with your tour operator.
Whilst we keep a stock of all denominations in US Dollars we do recommend that you pre-order your small notes. As well as making sure you get exactly what you need this will also save you time when you come in.
ATMs will be available in most cities but may be limited beyond the city limits. All ATMs will dispense local currency. If you are taking a Cash Passport to Africa it is best to load your funds in Australian dollars.
